Grounded in who we are.

Our Roots is the most personal of the Sun Family Foundation’s initiatives. These three communities (elders, teachers, and Asian American and Pacific Islander families) carry special meaning for our family, and our giving here is grounded in our own lived experience.
It reflects who we are: our identity as an Asian American family, our deep respect for elders rooted in our cultural heritage, and our connection to educators through our grandmother, who was a high school biology teacher. Through Our Roots, we support organizations working in Orange County that uplift these communities.

Asian American & Pacific Islanders
Orange County is home to one of the largest and most diverse Asian American and Pacific Islander communities in the nation, with roots reaching back more than 150 years.
We hope for a future where the whole of this community is more fully seen, more deeply understood, and more meaningfully supported.

Elders
Orange County’s older adults are among its greatest treasures — the elders, storytellers, and keepers of language, tradition, and memory who helped build the communities we call home today.
We hope for a future where seniors age with dignity, secure in their needs and woven into the life of their community, never isolated or overlooked. We invest so that the people who built Orange County are honored as the treasures they are, and stay connected to the families and neighborhoods they helped shape.

Teachers
Teachers shape every future. They are often a child’s first guide, advocate, and steady presence who give far more than their salaries.
We hope for a future where teaching is joyful and sustainable, where teachers are supported and mentored well enough that fewer leave to burnout. We pay special attention to early-career teachers, who leave the profession at the highest rates, so that more of them stay and grow. When educators are cared for, students gain what they need most: experienced, well-supported teachers who can guide them year after year.

How we invest
We start with what’s strong. Our approach is to honor the contributions that define each community, strengthen the institutions and relationships that sustain it, and meet the needs that official numbers tend to hide. We fund organizations rooted in Orange County, and we partner with the people already doing the work.
